A poet? What the hell does that even mean anymore?
Is it the tragically extroverted hipster with the painfully obvious Theatre Arts skills down at the coffeehouse “poetry slam” screeching the specifics of the leftover angst from their visit to the therapist? Shit, everybody knows that you can’t make a living at that, so I’d want to at least be a Published Poet with a six-figure advance for a book deal at Random House but even that ain’t gonna cut it financially so I’d need a teaching gig preferably at an East Coast girl’s college…maybe one of the Seven Sisters or something so of course one so wants to fit in…to do the right thing and be sociable so like I’m having this torrid melodramatic affair with the wife of the Head of The Department who is becoming increasingly suspicious about my Lit Department outreach “hands on” tutoring housecall project with the four (or is it five?) co-eds who are just now starting to hear malicious gossip regarding my weekend trysts with the Semiotics instructor who drives up from Radcliffe every Friday night to stay at her “vacation” cabin and my oxycontin prescription is running out and that stupid fucking croaker MD is giving me a lot of static about “tolerance” and “dependence” I have completely overcomplicated my life and it’s all totally fucked up…but wait! What about that Lithuanian girl behind the counter at the CVS pharmacy? She definitely has access…and she said that she was going for a doctorate in Lit at the University…and desperately needed help with her Nabokov dissertation…maybe we can make some sort of arrangement… Yes! Things are definitely looking up! I feel more poetic already! Thank you Jesus®!
