I mean, if Hendrix is going to rip-off Prince, John Mayer, and Stevie Ray Vaughn like that, you’d figure he’d at least tune his damn guitar once in a while!

This leads to the postmodern characterization of knowledge itself, yet another issue on which Lyotard and Pynchon seem to be at odds. In The Postmodern Condition Lyotard suggests the possibilities of providing public access to “perfect information” stored in computerized “memory and data banks”(Lyotard 67) .
The implication is that once such data banks are established and this pure knowledge made available to the public, the stage would be set for an endless and “inexhaustible” free-flow “of possible utterances”(Lyotard 67).
Pynchon’s presentation of knowledge, however, makes this possibility seem somewhat farfetched for, in Gravity’s Rainbow, no data is ever pure; all knowledge is suspect. One method that Pynchon employs in getting this point across is his use of what Linda Hutcheon calls historiographic metafiction. By intermingling fictional characters and events with historical ones, without sending any clear signals as to which is which, Pynchon chips away at our belief not only in historical knowledge, but knowledge in general.
An interesting example of this occurs during Slothrop’s first Rocketman adventure. On a daring drug run, Rocketman “sees somebody who looks a bit like Churchill,” maybe “gets a glimpse of President Truman” and “knows he is seeing Mickey Rooney, though Mickey Rooney, wherever he may go, will repress the fact that he ever saw Slothrop” (Pynchon 388). In the first two instances Pynchon makes a gesture toward drawing historical figures into his novel, but leaves us uncertain.
The third instance is more interesting, in that it theoretically draws Slothrop out of the novel and into history. Mickey Rooney is an eyewitness to his existence. Unfortunately, this encounter, like so many historical events, is ultimately repressed and forgotten. Thus, through an admittedly playful episode, Pynchon presents the idea of objective and perfect information as always suspect and incomplete (even if we “trust” its bearer, as we trust Slothrop).
All knowledge is tainted by the conditions surrounding its production.
